08.03.1904 Hamburg is commissioned.
07.07.-09.08.1904 Used as an escort vessel to the imperial yacht Hohenzollern .
28.09.1904 Fleet service as part of the reconnaissance forces.
Autumn 1904 Participation in the fleet winter exercises in the Baltic Sea.
March 1905 Used as an escort vessel to the imperial yacht Hohenzollern to Helgoland.
September 1905 Speed comparisons between the Hamburg and its turbine powered sister ship Lübeck .
October 1905 Used as an escort vessel to the imperial yacht Hohenzollern to Pillau and Glücksburg.
February 1908 The cruiser takes part in the Atlantic voyage of the reconnaissance forces.
06.03-19.05.1908 Used as an escort vessel to the imperial yacht Hohenzollern to the Mediterranean.
Spring 1909 The cruiser takes part in the Atlantic voyage of the reconnaissance forces.
24.03-16.04.1909 Used as an escort vessel to the imperial yacht Hohenzollern to the Mediterranean.
21.04-17.05.1909 Because of riots in Turkey, the Hamburg is send to Mersina.
28.05.1909 The cruiser returns to Kiel.
-20.06.1909 Together with the Armored Cruiser Gneisenau , the Hamburg escorts the imperial yacht Hohenzollern to Finland.
18.07-03.08.1909 Used as an escort vessel to the imperial yacht Hohenzollern to the Scandinavia.
15.09.1909 Decommissioned and put into the fleet reserve.
02.07.1912 Commissioned and used as command ship of the U-Boat fleet.
- August 1914 Training and exercises with U-Boats and other Hochseeflotte surface ships.
06.08.1914 Together with the small cruiser Stettin and 10 U-Boats, the Hamburg operates NW of Helgoland.
12.08.1914 Another operation together with several U-Boats.
15.-16.12.1914 As part of the reconnaissance and U-Boat group, the Hamburg takes part in the raid to shell Hartlepool. The cruiser engaged several British destroyers while assisting own torpedo boats.
21.04.1915 The cruiser rams and sinks the torpedo boat S21 , causing some damage to the cruiser as well.
17-18.05.1915 Participation in fleet operations.
29-30.09.1915 Participation in fleet operations.
11-12.09.1915 Participation in fleet operations.
23-24.10.1915 Participation in fleet operations.

31.05.1916 Battle of Jutland: During the night battles, the cruiser defended several attack by British destroyers and cruisers, the ship is hit several times, causing several casualties.

15.03.1917 Because of its age and limited operational use, the ships crew  is reduced and used as stationary staff
command ship in Wilhelmshaven.
03.01.1919 Decommissioned.
07.09.1920 Recommissioned as flagship of the North Sea flotilla.
13-17.06.1921 Visit to the Shetland Islands.
July-August 1921 Together with two mine hunter flotillas, the cruiser is send to the Baltic Sea and Arctic Sea to remove mines laid during WW1. While operating in the Cola Beight, the ships are shelled by Russian coastal artillery.
February 1922 Ice emergency operations in the Baltic Sea, the cruiser is damaged during this operations.
Autumn 1923 Participation in fleet exercises.
08-14.07.1924 Visit to Riga.
14.02.1926-20.03.1927 As its last voyage, the Hamburg makes a training voyage around the world: England, Spain, West Indies, Panama Channel, Middle- and North America, Hawaii, Japan, the Philippines, Indonesia, Suez Channel, Mediterranean.
30.06.1927 Decommissioned and put into fleet reserve.
1936 Used as floating barrack in Kiel and Hamburg.
1944 Sunk during British air attack on Hamburg.
1949 Wreck raised.
1956 Wreck scrapped.
