Kanonenboot 1941

A class of projected gunboats - the first ships to be planned with a helicopter on board.

Appearance of the Kanonenboot 1941 Project

Based on the design of the Geleitboot 1941, a modified version, the Kanonenboot 1941 was planned. Although called Kanonenboot - gunboat, this class of ships was never intended to be used in the classical role of a gunboat. Instead, it was clearly a submarine hunter, introducing a new feature that is common for submarine hunters today - the helicopter.

Equipped with only two 10,5 cm guns, the main focus of this armament was set to anti submarine warfare, with a total of six depth charge launchers and a Flettner Fl 282 Kolibri helicopter. This kind of helicopters had been successfully tested for naval usage before, improving the anti submarine capabilities of this kind of ships.

Despite their forward looking concept, this ship class was never realized.
