History
The incomplete Gerard Callenburg
was scuttled by the Dutch in 1940. Raised by the Germans in the same year and commissioned on 11.10.1942. Renamed to ZH1
served most of its time as a experimental ship in the Baltic Sea. First attached to the 5th Z-Flottila, later reassigned to the 8th Z-Flottila, in 1943 sent to France together with Z27
. Used to covering blockade breakers and U-Boats. After the Invasion on D-Day, ZH1
, Z32
, Z24
and T24
were ordered to attack the invasion fleet on 08.06.1944. Near Ile de Bas, the German ships encountered the British destroyers Tartar
, Ashanti
, Eskimo
and Javelin
, the Canadian Haida
and Huron
and the Polnish Blyskawica
. During this battle, ZH1
was damaged severely, but was able to damage the Tartar
until a torpedo fired by the Ashanti
cut off the entire bow section. ZH1
sunk after its depth charges exploded.
