History
Three ships of the Italian Ciclone-class were captured in September 1932 in Portoferrario and Genoa. Being designed as escort vessels, they were first used in the 3rd escort division, later in the 10th T-Flottila at the Italian west coast.
The Impavido
was used for patrolling and escorting in the Tirreno Sea. On the 08.09.1943 the ship was at La Spezia for repairing boilers. With problems it was to Portoferraio for finishing repairs but in that place it was captured by Germans and renamed TA23
. The ship was towed to Livorno for repairs. TA23
was commissioned on 09.10.1943. On 22.04.1944 the ship attacked coastal sites at Bastia and Corsica. During a mine laying operation on 25.04.1944 the ship was hit by a mine disabling the engines. Towed by TA29
, both ships were attacked by British MTB and TA23
had to be sunk by torpedoes fired from TA29
.
