25.10.1902:  Zähringen is commissioned.
-10.02.1903:  Training and trials.
Feb 1909:  The ship is used for ice emergency duties in the western Baltic Sea.
-1910:  Used for fleet services.
20.09.1910:  Decommissioned. The ship is assigned to the Baltic Reserve Division.
09.05.1912:  Recommissioned, transferred to Kiel.
12.05.1912:  Decommissioned.
14.08.1912:  Recommissioned.
04.09.1912:  During a fleet maneuver, the Zähringen rams the torpedo boat G171 which sinks after the collision.
28.09.1912:  Decommissioned.
01.08.1914:  With the outbreak of World War I, the Zähringen is recommissioned and attached to the 4th Squadron.
26-31.08.1914:  Operations in the Baltic Sea to assist the beached cruiser Magdeburg .
03-09.09.1914:  Operations in the Baltic Sea.
22-26.09.1914:  Operations in the Baltic Sea.
05.12.1914-02.04.1915:  Patrol duty in the North Sea.
28.05-04.07.1915:  Patrol duty in the North Sea.
09-11.09.1915:  Operations near Gotland.
21-23.09.1915:  Operations near Gotland.
11.11.1915:  Sent back to Kiel, used as target ship for the torpedo inspection.
22.07-10.09.1918:  Reconstruction to cadet training ship. Modification stopped at the end of the war.
13.12.1918:  Decommissioned.
1926-1928:  Zähringen is modified to a radio controlled target ship. All guns are removed and 1700 tons of cork are installed in the ship. After the modification, the ship is only able to reach 13 knots.
08.08.1928:  First usage as a artillery target ship.
-1944:  Used as a target ship for other Kriegsmarine ships.
18.12.1944:  Sunk after an air attack on Gotenhafen (Gdynia) in shallow waters.
26.03.1945:  Sunk as a blokade ship at Gotenhafen (Gdynia) harbor entrance.
1949-1950:  Wreck raised and scrapped.
