History
This Italian torpedoboat was captured on 09.09.1943. After equipped with additional antiaircraft guns (2 cm and 4 cm) the ship was part of the 9th Torpedoboot flotilla operating in the Aegean Sea. TA16
(former Castelfidardo
) was commisioned on 14.10.1943. While covering an important supply convoy on 31.05.1944, the ship was heavily damaged by British Beaufighter, Baltimore and Marauder bombers, destroying almost the entire superstructure and causing heavy flooding. Towed into the harbor of Heraklion, TA16
was sunk when a nearby anchoring merchant ship, the Gertrud
, exploded during an air attack.
