16.06.1911:  Commissioned.
05.09.1911:  Participation in fleet parade.
10.10.1911:  Attached to the reconnaissance forces.
1912:  Cöln takes part in all exercises and voyages of the Hochseeflotte.
09.09.1913:  Torpedo exercises in Norwegian waters.
30.07.1914:  During the autumn fleet maneuver, Cöln tries to warn the first German naval airship about bad weather. Communications fail and the airship got lost.
12.08.1914:  Coastal defence in the German Beight.
15.08.1914:  Fleet operation with torpedoboats and the small cruiser Hamburg .
28.08.1914:  Another fleet operation with torpedoboats in the North Sea.
03.09.1914:  Battle of Helgoland: 
Together with the small cruiser Mainz , the Cöln tries to intercept British ships near Helgoland. Both ships engage the British cruiser Arethusa and 6 destroyers, when six British battlecruisers came into sight and attacked the German ships. Cöln was destroyed by gunfire and sunk at 14:35, only one crew member survived.
